Den of Theives

Good crime drama about a crew that robs banks and some LA detectives trying to catch them. The crew is led by 2 former MARSOC Marines. Lots of weapons and shooting. A 240 even makes a cameo!

It was almost like a 2018 version of "Heat".

Good, entertaining flick, 7.5/10...

Warning: Grumpy Old Man Review. I thought there were just too many similarities between Heat (1995) and Den of Thieves. I grew up in the South Bay(Torrance, Hawthorne and Gardena and I graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Academy 30 years ago. Unlike Gerard Butler's character(O Brien) I actually went to South High in Torrance and played outside Linebacker on the football team.

The entire Elite Bank Robbers being chased by a specialized LASD Unit with a troubled Lt who has problems with the wife(sounds like Al Pacino's character in Heat) looks like it was lifted from the original Michael Mann movie. Also, the first Armed Car Robbery and the firefight with military style weapons in the city were the same as Heat. The only thing that was interesting was the Twist at the end.

It wasn't a bad "Shoot Em Up" type of movie but the story was not original. To this day I still recall one of the best lines ever said in a movie: "Never get attached to anything you aren't willing to drop in 30 seconds flat because you never when the Heat will be around the corner" (Neil MacCauley as portrayed by Robert De Niro). End of Grump Old Man Review and I offer my apologies.

Ugh. This movie. Tons of plot holes, which I won't go into due to spoilers. The filming, characters, and gunfights were well done, though.

I feel like it could have been better had it made more sense (like HEAT, which is well plotted, which is ironic considering all the plot holes later found in Mann's remake of Miami Vice).

Ok movie. Typical action based heist movie with a plot twist at end. Nothing extrodrinary. Good action flick to kill the time. I am a fan of heist movies, so enjoyed. But this is Hollywood remember when watching.

Still did not quite understand the bank heist as a diversion, why they did it. Just to throw Butler's character off the scent?

Pretty stupid also how the "cop and robber" are confronting each other and playing mind games.

And I would hope in real life that a bunch of cops do not try to provoke a major firefight in the middle of a traffic jam. Just keep eyes on at a distance and call in air support to track. In real life there would have been a lot of did civilians on that highway.

The scene with the daughter going to prom was pretty funny though.

One of the reasons for so few plot holes in Heat, is that aside from location change, and a few other inconsequential details, it's a true story. Neil McCauley was even a real person.

Awesome article. Thanks for sharing.
Heat is one of my favorite movies, but Den of Thieves was so-so.

"MARSOC FAST MARINES"? , well at least the the Merriman character was a specialist in "Soldiering". Dude supposedly EASd in '04, prison in '06, right when MARSOC was being stood up.

Decent movie, get the basic background shit right and it would be infinitely better.

Oh, and it's good that everyone has their military affiliation tatoo on their right shoulder... lets the viewer know what's what

I'll admit, I'm halfway through the movie, but damn... the only thing that might be more fucked up is if the characters were "Marine Snipers of the 69th Air Wing based out of Fort Bragg". Kind of see the similarities to HEAT, but comparing sweet granny smith apples to 3 day old dog shit... you decide which is which.

Also, the black LASD officer uses the N word so much, it's laughable.

Yeah it was

I THINK they actually stole money from the little bank, that was what they put in the armored car to take into the reserve to be shredded. Remember the armored car was stolen with no money in it.

Those scenes just ruined the movie for me, too over the top, put the cop's inside man at risk, etc.

They were trying to go for that tone that was set with Pacino and De Niro's characters when they meet in the diner in Heat and missed the boat completely. In fact, it felt like half of Den of Thieves were scenes of the two foes strutting around and ruffling their feathers like peacocks.

Two star movie, at best.

3/4 of the way through and Nate Boyer has made an appearance, didn't realize he was acting.

I'd agree with Spinner, 2 star movie. But still better then the NBA championships.

Ugh....Won't ruin the end for anyone either, but really? That was some lame writing.

The action was pretty decent, but I'd say the movie was a bomb. Rampart style dirty cops, everyone has their own clique tattoos, etc. I'm not sure what I was hoping for, but this didn't pay off for me.
