Why Alexa is in the bathroom...

I'm not a paranoid fellow, however...

Never ASK ALEXA These Questions or You Will Regret It - STOP

I am deeply cynical and probably border on a healthy paranoia. The fact that Amazon would share info with our intelligence agencies doesn't surprise me.

I asked the "exact" same questions he did and got the "exact" same responses.

"Alexa, if I ask you to record a conversation can you?"

Not only did it not respond, it immediately cut off.

What do you find to be the top pros and cons of having this device?

Are you able to command it to record your conversation? "Alexa...record my conversation..."

The Echo is always listening, and only responds to you when you say "Alexa".

Is it confirmed that it is not listening and "recording" information when you don't say "Alexa"?

Someone should wireshark it and do some packet analysis to see what exactly it is sending back.

Purchased for the wife when I was OCONUS.

I really only use it for music, recipes, weather, news, as a timer when cooking and basic info when I don't feel like searching on a computer/iPad.

There is a lot of work being put into this as we speak. The problem is that any packets back are encrypted and there isn't a lot you can do but monitor size of data transmissions. Even then, it's hard to prove much.

Our best hope is that someone inside Amazon spills the beans for the benefit of the rest of us.

My kids won one and have it in there bedroom. They did not know that I could see and hear the history of 2hat they have asked and said to Alexa. That created a fun evening when I showed them some of the questions they had asked.

It seems like it has to ALWAYS be listening in order to hear you say "Alexa".

I don't like talking in my cubicle at work, because you never know who is listening in, so I can't imagine having one of these in my house. I even have the voice text feature on my cell phone turned off.
