Recon patrol attacked by tiger

Rest In Peace Sgt. Phelger.

Came across the bit of Force Recon history from Vietnam.

There was a picture of that tiger tied to a poll being carried by another patrol that hung in our CP.

A less famous incident where a team(s) surrounded by Hyenas shot one and then posed for a pic.

Our Plt Sgt, Gunny Daniel R, gave us three books for mandatory reading: 1. Ranger Handbook - 2. Force Recon Diary 1970, and 3 - Insider Force Recon, Recon Marines in VietNam. One of these books, I think it was "Diary" tells the story of Sgt. Phleger. His story - although tragic - was inspirational to me, as I had the same MOS (2841 - a "tech") and I was preparing myself for the Force Recon Indoc screen at this time.

RIP Sgt Phleger.

Just watched the video, it might be. The one I remember was more staged with the team posing with their catch. O/T, I do remember being on patrol in Kenya in 1994 and getting stalked by "something". Don't know if it was a lion, wildebeest or whatever the F but it was big, it grunted/snorted and we didn't hang out long enough to find out. The following BMNT my point man and I went out to do a little cloverleaf of our pos and make sure we didn't leave any trail and we spooked a couple of gazelles or antelopes. Well they spooked the shit out of us too, enough to take our weapons off safe. I'll blame the insert officer for that one **cough, SB, cough** . Also had to have a CH-53 buzz the DZ in Malindi to scatter the giraffe's, elephants etc. prior to going to altitude for drop.

Yeah it was the week after a monsoon and your original insert point was under water so we bumped to the alternate.

I remember the Kenyan LO telling me that the croc's would be out and lions would be hunting.
