Icon5 U.S.A.F. TACP Prep

I know this topic has been touched on in the past, but I'd like to see what is up-to-date as of now.

My son has been advised by his USAF Recruiter that he is eligible for a TACP contract, and is currently going through the motions to secure said contract.

I'd like to get some feedback from anyone here that is willing to offer any advice on preparing for this field.

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Recommend he head over to the ROMAD Locator or ROMAD.com - Specifically the "Retraining" and "Ask the Schoolhouse" sections of the forums. They have everything he could ask posted there

ALSO RECOMMEND he Research a little before asking questions - They don't like spoonfeeding over there, and they eat their own.

Understood. We've been poking around Romad already, but very briefly. I suppose I just feel a little more at home here.

I'm just not sure how many guys we have on this board close to that field...

Thanks for the tip.

Roger that.

If you haven't been able to find his answers over there, feel free to PM me over here, and I'll answer them if able.

C Co Rgr,

I don't know what recruiter you have talked to and how far along your son is in the process (different parts of the US have different requirements), but the scoop from my bros at Headquarters Air Force and the AF recruiter in Lawton, Ok is:

• Be male (current DoD policies)
• Be a U.S. citizen
• Score at least 49 in the general category of the Armed Services Vocational
Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test
• Have normal hearing
• Have normal color vision and depth perception
• Have no speech impediment
• Have a valid driver’s license
• Have a physical profile (PULHES) no worse than 111121
• Qualify for a Secret security clearance

PHYSICAL ABILITY AND STAMINA TEST
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• 2-mile run less than 15:54 minutes (local AF recruiter quoted me 11:41 minimum on 1.5 mile run)
• Pull ups (2 min) 6 reps (local AF recruiter quoted me 2 minimum)
• Push ups (2 min) 42 reps (local AF recruiter quoted me 55 minimum)
• Sit ups (2 min) 53 reps (local AF recruiter quoted me 55 minimum)

Of note, the local recruiter mentioned that PT is not the big kicker, to quote the local Sgt at the recruiting office, "they can teach a monkey to do pullups at basic." The big kicker is mental toughness, 'never, EVER, quit!'

Once basic training is complete, the candidates will go to Lackland AFB, to be run through a week long selection process. If the candidate makes it through there, it is off to Hurlburt Field for the beginning of the pipeline.

TRAINING
• TACP Initial Skills Course — 14 weeks
Hurlburt Field, Florida
• Combat Survival Course — 3 weeks
Fairchild AFB, Washington
• Basic Parachutist Course* — 3 weeks
Fort Benning, Georgia
(*For qualified volunteers: dependent on mission requirements and
course availability)
Additionally, opportunities to attend training such as: Air
Assault, Military Free Fall (MFF), Pathfinder, and Army Ranger schools.

The one thing the recruiter here did mention is that the numbers of openings for TACP are not big numbers...8 per quarter for this area.

He did mention that if Dad, who was a Ranger, comes in with the son; that does add a bit to the equation. Largely due to the fact that Dad has likely instilled the 'never quit' gene in the son.

Good luck to your son,

Thanks you.

Yes, that is consistent with what we have been told so far. I appreciate you taking the time to post. It's good to see the consistency of information.

He has not signed any papers yet, as we're just trying to make sure at this point all his ducks are in a row...

Cheers,

Thanks all for the input over these last few months.

His TACP contract is officially in ink, as of last week. The rest is up to him!

Does he have a BMT Date yet?

You should try to make it to his graduation, as his semi-free weekend will be much nicer.

Recently, all applicants entering BMT with TACP GTEP reservation must sign the following fact sheet (AFRS HQ Form 42) FYI PJ, SERE, EOD also have a version, CCT/SOW is expected to be approved and available soon:

FACT SHEET: TACTICAL AIR CONTROL PARTY VOLUNTEER

Congratulations on your decision to volunteer for the Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) career field. This document is provided to ensure your decision to volunteer for TACP duties is as well-informed as possible. Your signature on this document acknowledges you have discussed each topic with your recruiter and understand each statement.

1. I have thoroughly reviewed the TACP information available at the Air Force Special Operations Command’s website at http://www.afsoc.af.mil/specialtactics/. I have also thoroughly reviewed the TACP career field description provided in the Air Force Enlisted Classification Directory (AFECD).

2. I have met the standards of the TACP Physical Aptitude and Stamina Test (PAST) and will continue to maintain the standard.

3. Following basic military training, I will attend the 5-day TACP Prep Course, conducted at Lackland AFB TX, and the 84-day TACP Apprentice Course, conducted at Hurlburt Field FL. I understand these courses are among the most physically and mentally challenging courses in the US Air Force.

4. I understand TACP duties will require me to be responsible for others’ learning and safety in challenging conditions. Besides knowledge and skills associated with TACP duties, I will be expected to learn and demonstrate responsibility, attention to detail, communication skills, leadership, and resilience.

5. I understand approximately 31% of the Airmen who start TACP training do not become TACP Apprentices. If I fail to complete TACP training, I may be discharged from the Air Force if my ASVAB scores are below 55 in any category. I understand reclassification into another Air Force Specialty is subject to availability of other technical training openings and evaluation by training cadre and the chain of command.

6. I understand that primary TACP duties include direct combat and may often subject the TACP Airman to extremely hazardous and risky conditions and situations not expected of most US military personnel. Furthermore, I understand that USAF TACP specialists are often asked to put themselves in harm’s way as it is one of the few true front-line combat jobs in the Air Force. Furthermore, I understand that TACP Airmen are often embedded within US Army combat teams and are expected to engage enemy forces.

TACP Candidate Signature/Date:

Again, congratulations on your decision to volunteer for the TACP career field. It will be a challenge unlike any you’ve ever experienced but the rewards will be great! We look forward to you joining us as one of the Air Force’s most valued Battlefield Airmen!

Rodger that. He has his BMT date. We're planning to make it to his graduation...we hope...

Johca - That verbiage looks pretty familiar. Also, he should be on a six year contract...

Try to get down for the "coining" ceremony. Thursday AM, and he'll be released if he has someone here (or if he has a good Wingman who's parents are willing to adopt).

My son's graduation was rained out so we didn't get the big parade.

He'll get one day (as a min) off-base, it'll be gun-show weekend if your lucky.

PM me once he's in and we can help you get a good Hotel.

SN -

Thanks tons. We're definitely going to try and get there early in the week. I didn't realize their graduation was such a process until his R gave us the rundown on how they do it...

Pretty neat.

While at Bagram this past year, some Air Force fellows wanted to find out how to excel at the TACP training. I told them to follow the Marines and do what they do in PT. I got them a copy of an old MCO on physical fitness. Not long after, Stars and Stripes did a piece on the criteria and interviewed some of the graduates (JTAC) who gave a short presentation to some of the troops (AF Security Police) on how to succeed in the programme.
