617th was not part of the 160th in it's beginning. It was an independent special ops capable aviation unit. Just like the 129th, and all the SF flight platoons. I knew, know,worked with or flew with most of the pilots from that unit and it's predecessor (designation escapes me) unit. It was in the early to mid 90's by the time 160 was able to completely assimilate them, and then it was awkward, that theater commander thing the main obstacle.
I and a handful of others from the 129th took 5 of our hawks via C5 to Panama in the fall of 1987. I did two 3 month tours there (another in '88). As most of you know, the 129th was absorbed into the 160th as 3rd Battalion while the 617th later moved to Puerto Rico to become D co, 3rd Battalion.
I am not sure of their current designation since 3rd BN shuffled their company identifiers.
