This thread is humbling.
IMO this checklist not only addresses issues related to suicide, but in general good healthy living practices and related to the wisdom in this thread - relying on family, friends, peers to help through difficult times. It focuses on improved sleep, gratitude, play/being in nature, man's best friend, etc. I hope it is helpful. Prevention Checklist |

I just got home from burying my nephew who took his own life. He was only 29. It was awesome to see how many of his friends drive for hours to attend his funeral. It was a testament to the man he was, which makes it that much worse. Such a great kid/man who cut his life too short. I can image how many more lives he could have touched in the future, guess we will never know.
Please if suicide ever runs through your mind reach out to another member on this board, a friend, family member or battle buddy. My phone is on 24/7.

I responded to a call last week of "my husband is lying on the kitchen floor bleeding from the wrist and a plastic bag over his head".
Slit his wrists in the basement. Ton of blood but nothing that would be a fatal amount. Must have decided that wasn't working and then went to the kitchen where he suffocated himself with a plastic bag. 2 cops were doing CPR when I got there. His 4 y/o daughter found him when his wife came home with her. He had visited the VA that morning for treatment due to a mental health diagnosis and had recently been hospitalized for same. He was an Army 0-3 according to the ID card. Real nice house. His civilian job was in some sort of logistics role. Rescue worked him hard all the way to the hospital where ER worked him for another 30 minutes. As The thread says: Get help or call a buddy. Call me. Call someone you hate. Just call someone.

I read that article in the NYT about the 2/7, and other articles in other papers. In general, posting a link without comments is a no go on this site. That said, I am still saddened that men who served our Country think this is their best way to be... I don't know what those Marines wanted.. And now I have two: Fuck Cancer, Fuck Suicide. S. |

We have to stop allowing the machine to push us to the VA -- the VA is neither equipped to respond, nor does it care. Only WE care.
I won't lie -- I've had my share of dark thoughts. Still have them. But what keeps me happily trodding through this strange journey that is life, is friends. Family might want to help, but how can they? Who in your family understands you? Friends do, especially those like us. I have my support team. Its small, but I know that if I reach out, I won't be ignored. Its our responsibility to be the same to someone else. Don't coddle. Don't patronize. Don't judge. Just be a friend. I think that is more than enough....

For me the biggest take-away from the NYT article is the use of social media in reaching out. My old Battalion has a very active Facebook page where lots of dudes have reached out for no-shit help, or just to talk things through. It's definitely been beneficial for a lot of us.

Just read about 2/7 in the Stan-2008. No one understands unless you have been 'there'.
Being in CAP in Nam and interacting with the people and running ambushes every night I think was a different feeling or story for us.msybe we came home with a different feeling in our heart's and mind's.

This is one of the best threads I have seen in my 5+ years on this site. SB - my already high respect for you has increased immensely. I was consistently wrecking my life and relationships up until 2008 when I finally realized much of what has been spoken in this thread. Has made such a difference. Fucking awesome.
[QUOTE=Silverbullet;1058473415] My suggestion is that anyone who has suffered any type of head trauma or the effects of a blast get checked for TBI. [QUOTE] Yes!!! My TWO TBI's were found only when I had an MRI of my brain during a cancer appointment. They found two different residual brain bruises on my brain stem. Finally understood why I couldn't smell, taste, couldn't control upward eye movement, etc. Also understood a big part of the reason I was so fucked up, half retarded, and mean. Knowing, understanding, and employing healthy compensatory measures are so important.
