2 Marines killed in attack in southern Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AP) ó A U.S. official says an insurgent attack on a British air base in southern Afghanistan has killed two American Marines and wounded several troops.

The official says the attack at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan's Helmand province involved a range of insurgent weaponry, possibly including mortars, rockets or rocket-propelled grenades, as well as small arms fire.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because U.S. military authorities in Afghanistan had not yet announced the battle.

Camp Bastion is a British air base and is adjacent to Camp Leatherneck, the main base for U.S. Marines in Helmand.

A number of aircraft at the base also were hit by insurgent fire, the official said.

Had a suicide bomber blow himself up in the soak lot in 09. Also had numerous dudes just step over the berm into our UAV launch site in Apr/May 09, to the point we posted guards on the area because the BDOC wasn't doing anything about it. They also had a bunch of Brits get jacked up and one killed on the range with an IED, before the BZO range got moved inside the berm of LNK II. Where there is a will, they will find a way.

I'm surprised it took this long to hit the hangars...

R.I.P. Marines...

Also, were Prince Harry is stationed as confirmed by the Associated Press. It's like they want him to get killed for the sake of a headline. Disgusting. RIP Marines.

Must've been there at the same time, though we had pushed South by then.

We used to fly out in 47's and walk back in while we were I waiting for the launch. Nothing I saw about that place from there hinted that you could get anywhere near RPG range without being in full view.

Then again, we had our DMs help out with the base watch rotation and they didn't seem to get too bored.

Wonder how much the ROEs have changed since then, and if that had any part in the success of this attack.

OH WOW...We used to drive from Tombstone to Baston multiple times a day when I was there back in '07-'08 and had no real immediate threat within the area. Talk about being in the middle of no where and able to see for quite a distance.

RIP to the fallen.

They used to set up 107's in the desert outside that base and set a timer to go off after they were long gone. All we would find was a fucking pile of rocks they used as a base for the rocket.

I doubt there was anything resembling a battle, outside the base there is nothing for about a million klicks but rocky desert.

RIP Marines.
