Recoil is about the only one I can stand to read semi regularly anymore, Lots of good guys submit articles to them, like Pat Mac, Pannone and Frank Proctor and they do a good job of balancing out the gun porn stuff with good information that actually matters....... SWAT occasionally has some good articles too..

Is he an NRA Member? If not get him a NRA membership, which includes a magazine subscription.

How old is he? I agree with LP, that American Rifleman typically has some decent articles about both modern and historical firearms.

Despite anyone's concerns over the NRA's politics, AR is not a bad mag. Unless your nephew is a metro ninja gunfigther.

Glad I grew up reading Bill Jordan,Jeff Cooper etc.

+1 on NRA membership.

Anyone ever notice you never see a bad gun review in gun mags?

Recoil magazine is targeted for the Mall Ninja tactical wannabe gear queers.

Yeah, I miss the old Guns and Ammo, with Jeff Copper's words of wisdom on the last page of every issue.

Gun reviews in the current gun rags? Yep, GPC, they are nothing but advertisements by the gun manufacturers. And the reviews always do nothing for me - a lot of fluff about, "well, shot a 1.25" group using Remington ammo 185gr, and a 1.85" group using Winchester 230gr ammo, blah, blah, blah..."

Give me a real review of how the gun functioned after shooting 1,000 rounds, not cleaning it, dragging it through the mud, taking it through a intense week long shooting course, etc.

I like a magazine called Military Surplus. It is mostly about old guns from WW1, WW2, and the Cold War, so the articles are not just cheerleading for the newest cool gear or what some advertiser wants you to spend money on. I happen to be one of those dinosaurs who, instead of spending $1000 on a plastic gun that shoots tiny .223 holes in a hummingbird's eye at 500 yards but only if you baby it, would rather spend half that on a durable weapon that makes larger holes dependably in man-sized targets at 150 yards and doesn't mind all that much if you clean it regularly. The articles in Military Surplus will call the lousy weapons out for being dumpster bait if necessary.

I have been noticing lately in Gun mags that they really don't test weapons that working folks can afford. All I see is high end custom ARs and Glocks.
I don't understand why they do that? I always felt gun mags were around to educate and maybe help folks make an informed purchase?

I find Recoil to be more of a gun porn kind of thing. It's geared to promoting and advertising the "tactical lifestyle".
Although I don't buy gun magazines anymore, I kind of like American Handgunner.

Just once I'd like to read a review of a new pistol or rifle that said it was a piece of crap and not worth using as a boat anchor.

Send your guns to GPC for a fair and honest review.

You are not the only one. I'm sure somewhere out there. A writer praised a Jennings.

Just recently read an article where the author bitched about the weather at the range. How about how did the optic perform etc? Plus in the pics they were under cover. Bunch of Sally fuck fucks. I shoot anytime any weather.
