My take a way from the way he pitched last night vs. his 9 inning gem in his last start is that the Boston hitters are very good and put a LOT of pressure on you....they pretty much made him look mortal IMHO. (understood you can't have a great start every time out).

There were some outstanding defensive plays by the Yankees that helped him out tremendously....I expect a close hard fought series.

Not happy with the Yankee base running this year.

There's only 5 months to go!! Anything can happen.

Agreed. I understand that Stanton went on contact but if you don't get a walking lead and aren't leaning towards home as the pitch crosses the plate...you're never going to score with the infield in. They need to clean it up

Seeing all of the hope and optimism of the Yankee fans, I almost feel bad knowing that the Cubs are going to take the Series from them in 5 games come November. But at least you have the summer and part of the fall to look forward to.

That sounds like the makings of a SOCbet. Let me know what you want to do about terms come October...

Let's see how the season turns out, could be that the Yanks don't even make it into the wild card spot.

This from a guy whose team has won only three more games than it's lost, a quarter of the way through the season...

I've been to 10 Padres games thus far. We have some excellent young talent but we can't seem to put it all together. This most recent series against Washington hurt to watch.

That game was absolutely incredible. It's one thing to beat their 5th starter...its a whole nother story when we bring down their ace. Judge taking that chicken wing closer DEEP into the night was the cherry on top.

Bust out the brooms!!

Even though there are 9 teams with higher opening-day salary totals for the 2018 season...

Which means there are still about 130 games left on the schedule.

Don't forget, baseball is a marathon, not a sprint.

No doubt.

Anything can happen over 162 games and the post-season...

...except the Cubs beating the Yankees in the World Series.

Where are all the oddballs?

I bring up that question because one of my local radio sports shows this morning, which devotes a big chunk of its time to the MLB scene, was talking about one of my favorite Cubs pitchers from way back when, Turk Wendell. Mets, Phillies and Rockies fans also got a taste of his eccentricities. I won't go into the story that was told by a local sports columnist who also has the radio gig, but it was pretty funny, involving bow hunting, mountain lions being chased by his dogs and a search party sent out when he didn't return home that night. And that was something that happened off the field, forget about brushing his teeth in the dugout between innings.

One of the things that I miss about baseball is that it used to have a revolving cast of goofy characters taking the field, mainly pitchers but also other position players. Mark Fidrych might have been the most notable, but you also had Bill Lee (who once, when asked about mandatory drug testing, said " "I’ve tried just about all of them, but I wouldn’t want to make it mandatory") and a bunch of others.

I still enjoy watching the game when it's played well, but what I really miss more than anything are some of the individuals who made it even more enjoyable. Like football, it's all becoming more corporate and to a certain extent, boring.

^ Yeah, the game certainly had its share of characters back during the free-wheeling '70s, '80s, and '90s. Along with the players you mentioned, guys like Dock Ellis, Billy Martin, Ozzie Guillen and so on definitely made baseball a lot more interesting back in the day...

I probably should have put Billy Martin near the top of the list, his battles with Steinbrenner (and just about everybody else, it seemed) were legendary.

And entertaining.

And on that note, let's not forget the epic tirade by a Braves minor league manager, Phil Wellman, when he disagreed with some call an ump made in a game back in 2007.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGZUKHtW7vg

The best part of it starts at about the 1:15 mark when Wellman starts low crawling toward the mound, and when he gets to the rosin bag he pulls the "pin" on it and lobs it toward the home plate umpire, where it "explodes" in a white puff. Definitely in the kill zone.
