Fingers crossed for the best. Flew out of KL in October, they seemed fairly together.

To FL370 and then- nothing.

Peculiar and no possibility of 'good'.

Respectfully,

Interesting that contact was completely lost. I would think that primary radar would still pick up a signature even if something extremely catastrophic occurred.

As stated nothing good comes to this.

Apparently two of the passengers on the manifest were not actually on the plane. Both reported their passports stolen in Thailand.

....or just a bomb. Terrorism/criminal activity has to be near the top of possibilities, especially with two stolen passports.

Yeah, criminal activity for sure. A bomb would be more along the lines of something that happened so quickly that there would be no radio calls/comms... I guess I was just thinking hijacking because of a different angle.

I have to think this is somehow connected to the crash. Sadly Thailand has long history of travel document fraud linked to criminal activity and terrorism.

Although I think that there is a distinct possibility that this disaster could be an act of terrorism - the two stolen passports are a key indicator - it's interesting that up to this point no organization has taken credit for downing the plane.

That being said, there may be another explanation for a near total destruction of an aircraft, a mechanical failure of the pressurization system where the outflow safety valves remained closed. Think of an airplane fuselage as a balloon and if you overfill it (because there's no way to slowly release the pressure due to the closed valves) it will over time lead to a catastrophic, explosive event at cruise altitude.

Just my two shekels here.

ETA: Yes, the crew would be alerted through the Engine Indicating and Crew Alert System (EICAS), but there's always the possibility that the detection systems also failed.

Air France 447 and a couple of military crashes over the years come to mind. A series of minor events adding up to a flight profile unexpected by the pilots, resulting in an unwillingness to correct the problem (or applying incorrect inputs to try and correct it) due to severe cognitive dissonance--and riding that dissonance into the ground. In one crash where I lost a colleague, the pilot had at least a dozen seconds of the EGPWS (ground proximity warning system) firing and took zero action because his brain couldn't process something was wrong.
