To get that result with 2/3 alcohol and 1/3 aloe vera gel, you need at least 90% alcohol as an input.

No less than 60% for the final product. The reason for the higher content alcohol to start posted by the OP (91%) is to account for the dilution by the other ingredients.

There is a dilution formula for this. You'll need to brush up on your Algebra skills.

C1 * V1 = C2 * V2

C = concentration
V = volume

1 is your base, let's say 90% Isopropyl Alcohol @ 16 oz.
2 is your dilution (aloe vera). Since we know we're trying to get to 70%, we are solving for V2.

(.9 * 16) / .7 = 20.6 oz.

So we need 20.6 oz of aloe vera to add to the 16 oz of 90% IPA to get a 70% concentration of sanitizer.
And you'll have 36+ oz of sanitizer.

Generally NO... Denatured alcohol is created by adding chemicals that will injur you - benzenes, etc... All of them are absorbale thru skin.

Generally not a good plan.

I get that hand sanitizer is convenient...

But is it any more or less effective than anti bacterial soap?

Kroger was out of hand sanitizer this weekend (no surprise).. but still had several small bottles of foaming anti bacterial soap sitting on the shelf..

I’m not seeing why someone couldn’t keep a 2oz bottle of soap on their person just as easily as a 2oz bottle of hand sanitizer if they are truly worried about touching door knobs and all the other shit people are freaking out over..

I have a five year old case of it in my long term storage and am wondering if a shot of it before/during/after public excursions would be good preventive maintenance.

I think it’s the convenience factor. Pump gas hit with sanitizer vs going inside to wash your hands.

Why not just put 91% in a little squeeze bottle - like a CLP cleaning kit bottle? It'll stay liquid enough, for long enough. You guys get manicures too?

Edit: Just tested it - uh, yea - stays liquid for a while.

Nope.
Soap and the actual scrubbing/washing of hands is best all round.

As far as freaking on the touching. IMO the biggest habit to form is to not touch your face until washing or sanitizing your hands, period. I never wipe down carts, or worry too much over what I'm touching in stores. I treat it all equally as dirty/germ laden. My face is off limits until I wash or sanitize.

They actually sell those foaming soap bottles that'll do the foaming for you too, just add your concoction. We're using tea-tree Dr. Bronners with 5 drops of Theives essential oil and using those foamers at our outside sinks.

I'm the same. I remember two HMC's teaching a class years ago (2005 if memory serves), and they claimed that the people who are always using hand sanitizer or actually setting themselves up as they aren't allowing their own immune system do it's job.
I think there's some validity to this. Think about it, (And I'm not an anti-vaccination guy), but the world is vaccinated more than ever before, yet every year we have a new strain of flu or something that we can't control. Are we creating super-bugs? Maybe, I know that every time somebody gets the sniffles they dope themselves up. Many times you can let your body fight it off.

I’m about the same. I’ve used more hand sanitizer in the last weeks than I’ve used in my entire life. I don’t pee on my hands, so why should I wash ‘em.

My change of gears have been based on the fact that I could pass along to someone to someone that could pass it long to someone that could pass along to someone that was compromised.

PUBIC restrooms are my biggest pet peeve. I cleaned em off and on my entire life and this summer when I was able. There are some lazy, rude MFers' in this world! I never touch door handles anymore, as I use my shirt sleeve or take an extra paper towel from the dispenser.....

Some of the local distilleries around Austin (and elsewhere from what I've read) are now producing hand sanitizer and giving it to the public. Check w/ those in your area. If they're not doing it, suggest it to them.
