Lots of interesting stuff from JM on the M1 Garand. Here is a video about 80k M1 Garands that apparently have never been fired just back from the PI. Getting refurbished and put up for sale.

Here are more details on the PI guns.

I've been on the fence about a Garand for a long time. They are the epitome of cool and are very useful but with today's tech (and what I would currently own if it were for those damn boat accidents) I just don't see it as being a viable option. Certainly wouldn't turn one down if it was handed to me though.

You can get a Garand just because you like them.

Why does it have to be a "viable option"? Viable option for what? Half the shit in my gun safes are just because they're fun to shoot. It's ok to have fun shooting.

One of the things that put the biggest smiles on my face to shoot was outdated by 1900.

You obviously have no idea about the "Have" Factor.

At the risk of sounding like a parrot, for what option is this not viable?

Apologies good sirs, that post was more me trying to talk myself out of it than anything. "Have" factor and owning something just because you want it make perfect sense to me. "Viable" is only defined as: How the hell do I explain this one to the wife?

I'll be a little more tactful in future posts.

By the way, thanks for the video on the 86k rifles from the Philippines. Found that info very useful.

No place to put gadgets to double the weight.

Ammo options to avoid damage.

No offense taken here. Buy the rifle and tell your wife I said it was OK.

Checked out the video about the PI Garands. Saw the president of the Garand Collectors Association (Steve Rutledge) showing some of the returned Garands. Super nice guy and he and I teamed up and shot the "Vintage Sniper Match" at the CMP park back in June during the D-Day match. He had never shot the 1903A1 (1941 USMC sniper version) before because he had just bought the rifle the day before but did a very good job for his first time at the course. I really enjoyed shooting with him and listening to him tell some of his stories. The GCA is a very informative group on the Garand. Check 'em out. S/F

The CMP has refurb M1 Garands with new walnut stocks and new criterion barrels. I have one of these in .308 and it is a beautiful rifle. The price seems to a good one as well, as they are typically closer to $900.

The CMP Special Rack Grade (.30-06) M1 Garand is a partially refurbished rifle with a refinished M1 WRA or SA receiver, new production criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver is the only part of the rifle that has been refinished. Remainder of the other parts have NOT been refinished. The Receiver will have heavy pitting above the wood line. We currently have RM1SPECIALRACK for $650 and RM1SPCLRACKWRA for $700 available.

I got lucky and found a vintage pachmayr t grip and some stag-like grips for my S&W Victory Model (model 10) revolver.
