Some great choices here. I would add to the above names Jarhead.
Great eclectic combination of very cool music.

Not a movie, but the TV show, "Tour of Duty", especially the first year, had great music.

633 Squadron.

Although the movie honors the Mosquito and her crews, my wildest fantasy involves piloting a Spitfire through towering cloud canyons with careless abandon as this theme song is blasting through my headset.

This is an aviators theme, through and through.

As I understand it, they only bought the right to use the music for the TV broadcast. If you watch episodes online or on DVD, most of that good '60s music was replaced with generic studio music.

I believe A Bridge Too Far has a pretty good soundtrack.

The whistle tune in the Bridge On the River Kwai. I whistled that through my childhood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83bmsluWHZc.

That tune will be stuck in my head for no less than a week now.

+1 on both. Gael and Sgt MacKenzie. And yeah I know the lyrics. Both of those songs make me want to go kill something. Lots of somethings.

As far as original scores in war films...
The 1983 film Under Fire, about two reporters caught up in the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua, had a piece of music with pan flute in it that went very well.
The pan flute was a nice touch to throw a little Central American music into the score.

YOUTUBE link to the piece I mentioned

Great movie, very under-rated. Ed Harris gives an awesome performance as a mercenary: "See you in Laos"

Since you are adding TV soundtracks to the mix, the original "Victory At Sea" soundtrack wasn't too shabby. Bought the old 78 LP album, then the tapes, then the CDs. Dumb-kid-brother-the-attorney sent me the whole series on discs.

Plus 1000 on "Last of the Mohicans" soundtrack - play the CD when driving up to the Quetico.

I don't know if you're going to be able to find it anywhere "on demand" but if you can't, it looks like Amazon's got some copies for as low as $9.37:

http://www.amazon.com/Under-Fire-Nic.../dp/B00005LOKX

I'm going to order a copy myself because again, it's a really good movie...

ETA: Agoge beat me to it, sorry for the duplicated info...

Agreed.
Ed Harris had some great scenes in this movie.

His introduction towards the beginning of the film was awesome.
In war torn Chad, Nick Nolte's combat photographer character runs into him on a convoy he hitches a ride with... the wrong convoy.
Unless YOUTUBE takes it down, here is a link to a short part of that scene

I also uploaded the church top shoot out scene which you should enjoy as well if you liked the film.
***SPOILERS***
For those who haven't seen the film, the church video may spoil a surprise.

I was blown away when that song came up in the movie. ^^

And "Under Fire," man, that takes me back--probably watched it 10 times. Makes me want to dust off my Leicas. Oh, and Joanna Cassidy-holy shit.

Closing theme of the Dogs of War

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6K_TMhEyDw

Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling,
And took their wages, and are dead.

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.

A.E. Housman
