Lol.

If I was a taxpayer of that city I would be pissed. Why is my Police Dept buying $8,000 semi auto M249s? For what purpose?

And please do not tell me a police dept needs a full auto m249.

Apparently they don’t need a full auto m249 because they’re selling the semi auto 249. That could be an indicator they don’t need either. Or maybe they’re selling the semi and going to save up to buy the full auto. Who knows?!?!?!!

I'd be more pissed they traded them back in. Lost money without any use.

Nice budget.

It's not that they need them. It's that they need to have them on hand for others that may have a need.

Not only is it a semi-auto...it also fires from a closed bolt(!)

Why would anyone, anywhere, want that? So many other more viable options.....

There are drop in components to convert the gun to full auto open bolt, but they are available only to LE and Type 07/SOT FFL's. These components are not manufactured by FN, and FN is not happy about it.

Baton Rouge Sheriff's Dept. has a boat with a 240 and a MK19 mounted on it.

Me too! But unless it was made before 1986 (unless an FFL/SOT) - no freedom for me (us).

I was racking my brain, trying to come up with a time in my past that I regretted having too much gun or too much ammunition with me. Couldn't come up with one.

I would convert them to open bolt full auto if I had some, for police work of course.

That's why you buried some linked blanks in every patrol base. Must be getting hard to do that now...after all these years out there, any time someone digs down three inches, they run into a bedrock of linked blanks...future archeologists won't know quite what to make of that.

I love the SAW and 240. I miss shooting them. I have a tough time seeing a role for automatic weapons in modern law enforcement. Of course, better safe than sorry...

Well, hell, why not keep an AT-4 in the trunk and strap a couple drags to your utility belt also.

I have a hard time saying police can't have something, that I think the American people should have (cops are Americans too) as a check/balance against an out of control, tyrannical govt - a' la' the British vs the Colonial Citizens. Principles can be a bitch. I also realize this may seem to contradict my older posts on 'Miltarization' - but I don't think it does, *IF* we have the same stuff too. But who knows, I'm a flawed individual...

(Just talking small arms here - prolly not the AT4 and Frags... or Nuclear Submarines).
