My grandfather served in the US Army in WWI as did my wife's grandfather. My grandfather was injured/wounded (not sure how). He was a tough cookie and really loved the Army. He was not a sensitive new age guy. I remember him doing pull-ups every morning into his 80's
My wife's grandfather served in a graves registration unit. The experience was very hard on him and had a big effect on their family.

We have some mementos from them. Here are two from her grandfather.
