Exchanges/Secondment

I'm planning to do a year of university overseas (the usual exchange type thing), and I've heard that it's possible to get a military exchange to another Commonwealth unit if your going overseas. Can any body comment on this? (Canadian or from other Commonwealth countries)
What kind of restrictions/conditions and paperwork would be involved?

There's defining CFAO's about this. 2 CF programs are called Liason and Exchange. Ask your clerk, she can print them out for you. The programs are mainly for Officers, but if you don't ask, you don't get. If your plan dosen't fall into one of the "approved" ones (and of course yours won't), you'll need to have your CO talk to the overseas CO first and they both have to agree it's a viable thing. Then you get the thing approved, yada, yada, yada. I looked into it last year as I was going to work in Scotland for 6 months. If I can find the references, I'll let you know. It helps loads if the unit you want to exchange with already has an alliance with yours. It's definitly possible ans do-able with a little legwork (and expensive phone calls, letters, etc.) on your part.

I've heard of a number of people doing this, with reserve units only. I will ask some buds and get back to you.

Are there any Canadian bases overseas? None.
The last one now closed was in Germany and Bermuda.

Good link! Canadian recruiters hang your heads in shame. That's how it should be done. Although in Canada's defense we have almost nothing to offer.

OK, I finally found the doc's the clerk gave me when I was looking at going over to the UK for a bit. CFAO 10-4 outlines exchange, liason, etc programes, rules etc. Have your clerk print you off a copy.
And here's the rest of the ref's:
-CFAO's 20-49 Accreditation
-STANAG 2116A-SJ-100-001.AS-000, Chp 16 para 7-23 (Exchange personnel)
CFAO's 223 series
-20-17 (Customs for CF)
-20-1 (passport regs for CF)
20-50 Basic Standardization Agreement (important)

OK, Go get 'em
