Thumbs up Thud Pilots

Really good documentary on F-105 pilots in Vietnam. Cool story on the dog mascot.

Free on Amazon Prime. Well worth watching!

Some real amazing stories here. The refueling disaster one is just amazing!

Also explains a lot of the frustrations the pilots had regarding the politics that put them at higher risk and prolonged the war.

Good stories as well ftom several who were shot down and became POWs.

Best documentary have seen in awhile.

The Thud was really overmatched in its interdiction mission in North Vietnam. It was designed to deliver tactical nukes using the backflip delivery. Trying to knock out a bridge with a 500 pound bomb at four or five hundred miles an hour while being blanketed by AAA was very difficult. I saw the results many times in my two years over there. Many bomb craters around a still standing bridge. The NVA usually positioned 37/57 mm radar controlled AAA around interdiction targets which was very deadly against aircraft trying to deliver a bomb on target. We had a squadron out of Yakota that lost half its 105s in a six month tour.

My favorite Thud story was from a Route Pack 6 mission, I believe on the Thai Nguyen steel mill. The guys had gotten split up due to SAMs and had gone down low and were retrograding, in full blower.

The flight lead says, "3, say position."

3: "I don't know...but I'm going a thousand miles an hour."

If I had to pick one century series airplane to have flown it would have been that one hands down.

I'll be checking this one out, thanks LP.

At end of documentary there is a list of all Thud pilots that died in the war. 146 brave men. Rest In Peace air warriors.

Love the "Weasel" crews motto "YGTBSM". Lmao!
