What's a good option for a border-crossing to dip into Mexico for a day or two? I want to take my wife down, do some shopping and dinning, see a few things, and head back over. Nuevo Laredo seems to have tick up in organized crime, but I don't know what that means in the context of safety for two Gringos. I'm less interested in petty theft risks, and more political/socio.

I'm fine driving past border locations too, if going to places like Monterrey are advisable.

Here is a web site I use to do threat assessments in MX.

The dynamic you face is that the larger the city, the more crime and cartel activity you face. Coahuila State is typically low crime, but there isn't much there on the border except Piedras negras, which as of recent has been a shit show for cartel violence. What about flying into Mexico City, have a car pick you up, take you someplace nice and fly home the next day? Even the resorts that historically were safe are no longer off limits. Puerto Vallarta is turning into a very unsavory place, for example. before he died, SOTB and I were working on a crime analysis project there to help the locals get a handle on the increase in crime ( and decrease in tourist traffic)

I used to go to Matamoras while in Brownsville 2007 - 2010. Even my Latino colleagues don't cross over any more. While Nuevo Leon State has a relatively low crime rate, US Gov employees are forbidden to drive to Monterrey from the US Border. Thats the state of the border right now.

I am sure there are folks that may say they cross every day, but they may represent a different risk profile than you and your wife.

If you can manage TJ I was there for 6 days recently and it was timid. Hit up the casino, restaurants, taco carts, beach, etc. If you know any locals that helps too.

The only thing you can get in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico that you can't get in Eagle Pass, Texas is a friendly torture session and your head chopped off and stuffed into an ice chest with your own dick in your mouth.

Other than that, you'll have a great time.
