Latest is not confirmed dead but no brain activity and on life support. But earliest TMZ, CBS and Dailey news released articles stating he was deceased.

If you are old enough, this cover and $8.88 are all you need to remember one of the biggest power shifts in the music industry, breaking the financial hold recording companies held over the artists in priceing the albums. Petty refused to rase the price of his new album just because the company had decidede he had “made it big” after his second album and the fans would pay $1 more per album.
Other artest saw this and made a stand as well.
For that alone everyone that came after owes him.

20 plus years later I was out of the country at the time but "The Last DJ" CD was the most important comment on the music industry in decades.
Listen to it if you have not.
The music was petty the lyric were raw and hard.
Damn I sound like liner notes.

Tom was again biting the hand that fed him, the music industry, but he always though that hand was the fans, not the industry. He always sided with the fans.

As I stated in a previous thread, Tom was not only a great musician, more importantly, he was a great guy.

Rest in peace, Tom; thanks for the music, the memories, and everything else. You'll be missed...

I can't think of a better way to put it.

Thanks Tom, your tunes are forever embedded in my head.

Pretty cool tribute to Tom at the Florida Gators game yesterday. A packed stadium singing " I won't back down".
