Pentagon selects Israeli anti-missile defense system

The Pentagon announced they are purchasing the IDF Trophy APS defense system for use on the M1A2 Abrams tanks. The Trophy system was successful in defeating both guided and non-guided missiles. They assessed 15 different systems before selecting the IDF Trophy. The Trophy system will be deployed to the 14 Brigade combat teams first. Only the US and IDF will have the APS.

Pardon my ignorance, have ATGMs been a widespread threat for US armor in Iraq or Afghanistan in recent years?

I understand that they are a very serious threat in Syria / Lebanon, I'm just wondering if this purchase is a result of recent events, or preparation for the future.

Thanks.

Cheap protection. Good for the US Army!

This defeats RPG's also which are a common threat worldwide.

I cannot say if this was mediated by recent events. The capability of knocking down a $500 RPG, and saving a tank has obvious upside though.

Most likely sourced due to lessons learned in Ukraine and Syria.

Other nations learn quickly from our mistakes and successes.

There were several RPG 27's? that made their way into Iraq capable of destroying an Abrams. Don't think they were ever used against us though.

Not sure about 27s, but 29s were.

Future, for the tracked vehicles. Now, for the wheeled vehicles.

Still won't stop an APFSDS round, but there's not as many as them as there are RPG variants.

Prep for the future. When we could very well have to intervene in a local European conflict and are still committed to helping defend a NATO members borders, it's a sound investment.

Yes, sort of

http://armamentresearch.com/kornet-anti-tank-guided-weapon-captured-by-syrian-islamist-rebels/

With Libya and Syria collapsing tens of thousands of ATGMs were sold into the black market

I recall protocol for the LAWS rocket when stupid enough to engage a tank with them was to volley-fire them. I wonder how this system responds to volleys?

It was 07ish time frame, an Abrams came up uh sort of missing.....
It was asked if any of our "friends" could help finding it.

It was found.....with the front armor sliced away in a manner of inspection.
