I took the family to see the movie this past Thursday. Quite an entertaining movie. Some of the actual SWAT scenes were a little reaching but overall a pretty good flick. So much more peaceful without an ass clown around. :D

Since I'm new to the LE field and have only been on the road a couple weeks I won't offer my opinion as to the realism of the tactics since I don't know about them, but I can say one thing about the movie that was totally unrealistic. THEY DIDN'T DO ONE DAMN PIECE OF PAPERWORK THE ENTIRE MOVIE!!!!!! My hand still hurts from report writing. That's my only gripe.

i feel sorry for you Surf...Not!

Welcome to the "Bigs" Surf!:D It only gets better.

Sabre07 and I spent 6.5 hours up on the interstate today cleaning up 2 tractor trailers and what was left of a Mustang. Oh yeah, there was the ignorant chick driving the Mustang southbound in the northbound lanes in heavy fog! We had to clean up what was left of her too. Hey Surf; guess who had to write the report? You got it ! 'Ol MSC! It sucks to be me!:D

I'm gonna jump over to the vest and heat thread now. After today I think I might have something to say about that too!

See 'ya!

State Troopers work the wrecks outside of our city limits and PJ. We handle the wrecks inside. It varies from city to city though.

In our city limits we do the interstate. Motors don't usually work the interstate for enforcement, but all traffic monkeys are on callout teams for serious injury or fatalities. We happened to be about to start our shift and on call for the wreck. So we got it. The state does their share though.

Oh yeah, the movie.

I did see it. I did like it. It is patterned after my first call out after my Basic SWAT course. The only unrealistic part was we were in a potato chip truck instead of a limo...

Uniforms

Looked like they had different badges than LA, even though it was suppossed to be LAPD. Also I have never seen that "S.W.A.T" pin they were wearing on an LA officer. Is that authentic? Weird how they were wearing it offset from the nameplate.

SWAT pin

Although I have not seen the movie and will opt to wait on the DVD, LAPD SWAT does have a very small uniform pin just like all the other divisions in the city. Its a fraction of an inch long (like maybe 1/2 or 3/4") and looks like the letters "SWAT" carved out of stone. This as opposed to a flat name plate style pin with the word "SWAT" on it.

All patrol divisions have their own pins available at the academy as well as Metro, K9, Air Support, Bomb Squad, etc. I have FTHL, SW, and 77TH as these were the only divisions I worked.

And LAPD wears their name plates on the right breast pocket, badge above the left breast pocket. Shooting medals and ribbons/awards go above the left pocket, beneath the badge.

S/F,
Jeff.

Having flash backs, Jeff. Next thing you know, you'll be trying to sell that episode of COPS you were on. :D

Your not going back, man. We've got you all locked up here.

LAPD Uniform Pins

Thanks, Pacman1612.

Yeah, the one in the movie is one of those cheesy nameplate types.

So all the different divisions have a pin. Interesting. I assume they are not worn as a matter of course, since I don't seem to see them whenever I see LA on TV. Are they for more formal occasions, or just for mementos? Thanks for your help--just curious.

Our tactical team just changed to the one sold by Center Mass (eagle with MP-5, etc.) It seems to be growing in popularity with some agencies. Not a bad pin.

When I was there (89-95) they hadn't caught on really big. I don't know if they have since then. They weren't a formal or Class A uniform item, more of an everyday "show pride in your area" kind of thing. Maybe thats why they never caught on; morale was pretty damn low during that time.

We were authorized to wear an area pin, a military branch pin, and for ribbons or medals, if we had military ribbons those could be included along with any City awards. It wasn't a pin-for-everything, "I threw a grenade", patch/pin crazy thing. Everything was low-profile and under stated.

Glad I can clear a few things up...

S/F,
Jeff
