Check the Swiss 5,56 mm that Ammoman has from RUAG AG. It is clean, good looking stuff and shoots well. Price isn't too bad either. I think I paid 235.00 for 500 rds.

I visited a Gander mountain store yesterday. They had 200 rounds of UMC 55gr Hollow points for $100.

The Armory has done right by me. When in need of quality soviet bloc ammo in large quantities, including PKM boxes, linked, they were spot on.

Had it dropped ship to where the aircraft was flying from, already palletized and then it was CONEX'd and flown.

Wolf ammo - I will agree with the comments on Wolf .223 ammo being dirty and will cause jams quickly. Not sure what the deal is, but we ended up tossing quite a bit that had been provided by our procurement chain and went to remington. We were going through a pre-deployment workup and that constant 'Aw shit's' and transitioning to the secondary (although F'in GREAT for transition practice) took away from the overall training till the first day - then it was Remington rounds the rest of the week.

Wolf Ammo

Ditto on the steel case Wolf Ammo.

I have been buying the Prvi Partizan Ammo at http://www.ammunitiontogo.com and have had great results from my M4. $369 / 1000, real brass reloadable case 62 grain match bullet. I think this may be imported or even manufactured by Wolf, but it all has reloadable brass cases and is made in Serbia. I have also recently tried the 147 grain from Prvi Partizan in 7.62 NATO, same brass reloadable case, accurate from my Socom 16. Ammunitiontogo.com has good range quality ammo for pistol, rifle and shotgun at great prices. They also have good sales. Range quality 357 sig for about $415 / 1000.

My $.02

I wouldnt shoot it out of my POF .308 (Although POF uses wolf ammo for test fires and range tests) or my LTR due to the steel case, despite the lacquer coating. It is also very dirty ammo. Accuracy is acceptable from what I hear. My biggest bitch is the carbon. I also think that with the new regime change, that reloading will become a new found art. Steel cases cannot be reloaded. Give it a try and see what you think, its not unsafe, its just dirty. What are you going to feed it to?

Just to let everybody know, Palmetto State Armory (palmettostatearmory.com) has 55gr PMC Bronze for $350/case plus shipping. Not a bad deal at all for Bronze. Now that I've said that, leave me a case before you buy it all up.

Is bronze a brand name or the bullet type?

What everyone else said. I've probably shot half a case through my AR and haven't had any troubles at all. It shoots pretty cleanly and groups nicely. It's not match ammo by any means but gets the job done in a reliable manner.

OK, so what have you guys found to be the best all around -- quality at best price -- ammo for .223?

-- When I first saw the price http://www.ammoman.com/index.htm for how much Wolf ammo I could have gotten, I almost made a knee jerk buy. Glad I read the rest of the page... :)

Aimsurplus also has some cases of .223 for ~$340. I haven't personally shot any of it though, so I can't comment.

I have heard some people complain of issues with the PMC ammo (under powered), though I have never used it myself. The Federal XM193C from ammoman.com shoots good and I had no issues at all. Another good source for ammo is ammunitiontogo.com. I plan on buying another 3000 rds. of various calibers to put me in the comfort zone. I may even explore reloading in the near future.

I just bought a case of Prvi Partizan 62 grn BTHP Match ammo for $350 from gun broker. Great accuracy, a trifle dirty, brass cases. The price on this has gone up from around $329 up to $389. Its good ammo, shoots great out of my POF 415 and my M4. Ammunitiontogo.com used to stock it, but now all they have is the 55 grn FMJ. I am buying it while I can, It aint gettin any cheaper.

RGUNS.net has very good prices on Israeli Military Industries ammo right now in various calibers. Needless to say I am getting some in fast order.
