I'm reminded of the scene in the English Patient:

Quote:
Katharine: Hello. Geoffrey gave me your monograph when I was reading up on the desert. Very impressive.

Almasy: Thank you.

Katharine: I wanted to meet the man who could write such a long paper with so few adjectives.

Almasy: Well, a thing is still a thing no matter what you place in front of it. Big car, slow car, chauffeur-driven car.

Clifton: A broken car?

Almasy: Still a car.

Clifton: Not much use though.

Katharine: Love, romantic love, platonic love, filial love, quite different things surely?
Dogs can communicate by the way they hold their head, wag their tail or look at another dog (or avert a look). Perfect communication within the canine group. No communication necessary - every want, desire, need, emotion is communicated by gesture.

I prefer adjectives.

Of course I did once stop seeing a pretty hot chick because she'd reply to text with emoticons instead of words. To me it's a sign of simple-mindedness and laziness.

If Thomas Jefferson could write the fucking Constitution using a feather plucked out of a turkey's ass and having to dip it into a well of ink every few letters and still not abbreviate then surely people can reply to a question with more than hitting a pictogram invented by some chinese child in the pictogram factory.

Shortening for brevity makes sense when each letter costs money. When you're shortening because you are a lazy shitsack that can't be bothered to use proper grammar, then that's where the line should be. Otherwise, we might as well all talk like we're extras on Idiocracy already and call it "the natural progression of language".

It all makes sense now. One of 3/7's unofficial monikers is "3/7? No shit!" Plenty of graffiti on the FOB and shitter walls (and t-shirts) in Western Iraq and Helmand to back that "shit" up! By the way, 3/7 is Cpl Dunham & Cpl Wooldridge's unit.

I think Orwell called it Newspeak. If controlling the vocabulary of a language means controlling which ideas may be expressed, then dumbing down the language and its speakers assists and accelerates that process by handicapping the citizens in the capacity to formulate unapproved thoughts for which there are no longer any words.

On the other hand, a Pepe meme can express more ideas and spur more people into action than a 1000 word essay.

Nothing, imho.
Entropy connotes stagnation. Language evolution involves influence and change.

That's why we don't hear people speaking Old English anymore.

Although that doesn't explain why I still have to turn on subtitles when I'm watching some movie or TV show from Britain.

No shit. I hate when I buy something and the instructions are all in pictograms or some shit. Mother fucker, I know how to read, I don't need pictures(that more often than not don't match the stupid ass Ikea-type shelving I'm trying to put together anyway)

When did you become so old? I love the face slap emoji and bet Jefferson would have sued it in a couple of his replies to the crown if had access to it. (is the smile thing across the line too? haha)

That’s what my son said when I asked about Snapchat.

I stopped Googling things after M06 “furries” and KidA’s “pegging” comments.

Completely agree, my perhaps poorly made point was that many language purists resist change, but the fact is common usage tends to dictate language evolution.
