Based on the image, they have built in armor; thick skulls and massive scapula.
I shoot them in the head all the time. .22 CB. You have to be at 90 degrees from the bone, I shot a couple with a centerfire rifle and had them skip because I wasn't at a 90 from the skull, it still killed them.

For some reason, when I read your post, this quote popped into my head...

I have another one, and need to go into Ninja mode outside again to get him.

I have a buddy that says I should get a 22 conversion kit for my AR to resolve the situation. He said that's what he does, and he cannot recall where he got the kit. It's supposedly a drop-in bolt.

Anyone have one? If so, where did you get it?

Any advice?
Reading through this thread and hearing the story, Iím proud to tell you my dog killed two baby raccoons today and I think I ran over a whole family coming home from work..youíre welcome.

Just now reading this thread ... seems to be lots of firepower on hand for these varmints.
In the past when an infestiaation occurs... go to tractor supply and ask for golden marlin (fly bait). It is pelleted and will dissolve in Mountain Dew. Bout two tablespoons GM to bout two cans MD.
Place in a lid exposed in prime area.
They will only walk about 3-5 feet before permanent nap sets in.

Sometimes there will be three or four deceased when you check the area.

I used to have a bunch of them running around my place. Then I shot one off the deer feeder in my back yard a few months ago with my .17HMR and I haven't seen another one yet. It's like they all decided to relocate.

We now have a "zombie raccoon" epidemic going on with these trash pandas getting infected with distemper:

Get some Red Foxes. We have red foxes and they seem to have chased off all the raccoons.

But you have to hear this bullshit all night:

Maybe that's what happened to the raccoons around me, because I seem to have more than my share of Red Fox in the area. I killed one just a couple of months ago after I caught him nosing around my chicken coop. He already got three of my chickens, but he wont get anymore now. But he is also one of several. Saw another one last weekend about 150 yards out but by the time I grabbed my gun he disappeared.

Don't pretend that you're not stoked that the zombie raccoon apocalypse has broken out near you. You can legitimately go weapons free now. If you like, I can see about airlifting my nephew to your AO to assist. He has all sorts of varmit eradication experience.
