Gung Ho December 1983

Well, finally found a copy on E bay and won the auction for $9.99.

Read this magazine's special issue on the "Green Berets" back when I was in High School. Was a big influence on me. Been looking for a copy for several years.

Was that Kraft the 90 gunner with the pipe on his ruck, and a CAR slung across his chest,

Or was that Kraft the 60 gunner with the gun on a tripod / T&E, with an AG?

I can't remember the covers anymore, which one is which. But I DID have a T shirt about 20 years ago of a Kraft with the 90, but whoever had made the shirt had added a flare at the end of the 90 pipe, like it was a carbine or M-3 grease gun flash hider...

I think the PJ one came out in 87. I remember reading it, and saying "why the hell did I not do that!?" Back in the pre-internet days I did not even know there was such things as PJs until I got to the Ranger Bat.

I have the old Ranger issue around here somewhere.

I remember that issue as well. Came out shortly after I came to the US. Sparked my interest to read other books about SOF. I still have a few of them.

One of the guys on the Ranger cover was one of the Ranger aggressors and started off in my Ranger class - squad, actually. The guy got (deservedly) peered. Really, really hard. And after that we never saw him again. However, on the cover he's got a tab so I guess he learned his lesson.

I have (or had, anyway) a complete set of Gung Ho, Eagle, and the first decade or so of Soldier of Fiction.

Fall of 1983, was a Sophomore in HS. Read this Gung-Ho issue, Robin Moore's "The Green Berets" and JC Pollack's "Mission MIA". I was hooked after that.

Good thing I was not a HS student in the last ten years, I would have ended up becoming a SEAL.

Now I am going to have to dig out those magazines to check. I kept most of those magazines. Have one or two of the 2nd Batt produced Sua Sponte news letter. Pretty sure I have the Fort Lewis / McChord newspaper with Doc Holt on the cover too.

My friend made the Grenada jump. I think his picture is on the front of SOF, 1987?

Kind of like one of my classmates in the 18C course who was a native Spanish speaker, but got sent to Thai language and 1st Group. Or my brother who works for the State Dept, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, yet the State Dept sends him to an Embassy in Africa.

I knew the guy who published that magazine. He used to lay it out by piling stacks of pages on his living room floor.

He apparently started at SoF, then left, then started his own magazine. I never had the impression that he was loaded, but he lived well enough. He had a nice house.

He was a good dude. I wonder what he is doing now. That would be an interesting experience slug on a resume: "Publisher and Editor in Chief, Gung-Ho Magazine."

Back before the internet days, Gung-Ho was the main source of up to date current info for a young man to find out about SF, SEAL, Ranger, etc. qualifications, training, missions, etc. Probably at the time the biggest recruiting tool the Armed Forces SOF community had.
