Like most, I have a variety to choose from. For my every day carry gun, I chose the S&W M&P Shield 9mm. More comfortable as it is a single stack sub-compact. I carry a spare mag in my pocket. That said, if I have even a hint that I am going somewhere where there is a higher risk of something happening, I grab the Glock 19.

My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

I've been carrying the G23 for going on 20 plus years. I get the .9mm argument and in fact I'm about to pull the trigger on a purchase, Sig 938 BRG or the Kimber Micro, as I love their look and feel. However, have to say the G23 shoots well and has never FTF.

BulletAim - where are you in SC? The Palmetto State Armorys I have been in have ranges with rentals. I know there are several locations around SC.

Summerville. My dad is a police officer and we have a membership there through his agency. I've been to it before. I actually plan to take my CWP class there within the next few months.

Iíve only shot the shield in .40, and the recoil was definitely worse than my 19. I would think even in 9mm the shield would still be worse being a smaller frame. I know there is a noticeable difference between my 19 and 43.

While I agree .40 isn't for everyone - just me and cj, maybe - I'd suggest you don't rule out .45 if you're planning a subcompact platform for CC.
I had both a 9 and .45 XDS in 3.3" (I know, Springfield...) and shot the .45 consistently better; push vs snap or whatever. Sold the 9. You give a bit on round count, of course.
If you CAN range rent, try the same frame in different cals.

Jackson Leatherworks made me a beautiful retention OWB for the .45. I don't carry daily but if I did, this combo is extremely comfy.

P226/229(I carry 226 in 357SIG) with Stealthgear IWB. Very nice holsters. Get a discount on many holidays too.
Or a CZ PCR? .

If you talk to the guys working the range first, many will let you swap handguns for a single rental. Talk to them first. Let them know you want to try a few and they may let you change them out.
Buy 200 rounds and put 50 through each gun in a visit and you can check out 4 guns in a visit.

I'd go with 9mm over .40. Even in a G19- or G17-sized weapon. If you're looking at something smaller like a shield, or Walther PPS M2 -- which, I think, is a much better weapon than a shield -- 9mm, no question.

If 9mm terminal ballistics are acceptable: though, your would prefer a handgun w/limited muzzle rise/recoil. Then, the pistol you are looking for is the FN 5.7.

Expensive to feed. And not that compact for carry.

Yep, I do this with my G26. The spare mag I carry is for my G17.

+1. One of several advantages to staying with a 26 over a 43.
