Background timeframe

Good day to all,
I have just finished all of my medical requirements for a contracting company for an overseas contract. After this I emailed my contact about my clearance (was has been started). Can anybody tell me on average, how long a clearance will take and after my clearance, what can I expect until I am boots on the ground downrange?

Secret with a NAC/LAC: 4-5 months

TS with a SSBI: 5-9 months

But I've seen BIs come back in three months and I've seen them take a year. Then there's adjudication time. There's just no guarantee on how long the clearance process takes.

I'm in the same boat. (Looking for recent timeframes as the length changes throughout the year)

I put in for DOD Secret this week. (NO criminal, traffic, financial, or civil issues in my past)

Something to remember, each background submitted is different while being the same. If the organization sponsoring you has designated investigators in OPM, you might be faster or slower based on the workload. The agency(cognizant authority) you are submitting through DOD, DOE, etc also makes a difference. Know that you could be issued an interim clearance based on the fingerprints and basic computer checks. OPM is backed up so far right now I have one that I submitted for a KMP last January that wasn't accepted by OPM until I sent a reminder in May. It still does not show an investigation opened (now Sept); after the hack of OPM, everything slowed even more.

Thanks for the input. I've heard that the DOD is faster, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I was also curious because all of my medical forms say that my exams are only good for 90 days from deployment..
