Sat phones

Is Iridium still the current best for global use (been a few years since I bought one of these)?

Yes, IMO.

Iridium is the only that I know of that has sats in polar orbit, covering every inch of the globe.

Globalstar and Inmarsat are geostationary "bent pipe" sats that just act like a 22,000 km antenna- you have to be in their coverage umbrella to work.

My experience is only with local merchants in AK- not much use to you.

Depends on where you're using them. In the Middle East and Northern Africa, Thuraya works much better than Iridium.

I use a company called Blue Cosmo. As Sharky stated, there are two different coverage patterns neither of which do not entirely cover the planet.

Probably the one thing most folks don't realize is that they don't work inside, without an external antennae. You gotta be able to see the sky, the signal doesn't cut through buildings.

We had Thuraya in Iraq, seemed to always work. Know nothing about them.

Yep. Be sure it comes with a magnetic Puck antenna and I suggest several different lengths of cable so you can throw it on the roof of a building or car. Also, all SIMs are not created equal. An Iridium SIM that works in the US won't work outside the US for example (that may have changed by now). Ask me how I know... LOL

Good sim tip there, I never would have thought to ask. Is the inverse true as well?

Generally, yes (or that should be your assumption), with caveats. I wouldn't mess around, though. Also, if you want to be a stud, get multiple SIMs for redundancy. Two is One and One is None.

Edit: Get a second antenna as well. They're cheap enough.

What is the use case that prompted you to ask about sat phones? The requirement should drive your selection and load out.

That sucks. Glad you guys mentioned it before we bought.

EP, global travel, mostly urban (not adventure shit so none of this 'must have line of sight to horizon' crap). Essentially for emergencies only, though.
