I was at Camp Delta (Al Kut) when this happened. Photo ID access only at the DEFAC after that. RIP, Brothers.

2008/9 when I first took over HOFs on Camp Victory before moving to Mayor Cell with EODT, we were very stringent on Photo ID for DFAC access....because of this very incident. It was spoken about as if it had happened yesterday and we acted as if it had.

We had a few disgruntled folk try to bluff their way past, but we stuck to our guns and my Ugandan Guards contnued to impress me with their ability to remain calm in the face of repeated abuse.

We learnt a lesson and I am glad this was never repeated on my watch even when I was faced off against the Iraqi Army CSM who didn't have the correct authorisation.

RIP to the Fallen and God Bless their families left behind. My condlences to those here who lost friends and Battle Buddies.

RIP.

This incident is why most of my Marines stopped eating at the chow hall at Al Asad. Even after this incident, they still let Iraqis in to eat. After a revolt by the sergeant majors, they finally gave the Iraqis separate hours. Before that, I would sit eating my meal with my sidearm loaded, despite the regs, waiting for some asshole to jump up and start yelling "Allahu Akbar" or whatever.

Thank you very much, I should have said the link I provided was written by one of the young men I was so very privileged to work with, I was their International Police Liaison Officer (IPLO). Just some of the best young men I have ever had the privilege to know. I can honestly say I owe my life to them.

I never saw Iraqi's in DFAC 3 or at Camp Ripper DFAC. The only place in any DFAC they were allowed in late 2009 was in the VIP room in the Downtown DFAC, and that was under escort. Most of the time, they were directed over to Camp Majeed.

I still try to avoid the chow all at high traffic times, because of this event.

This sad event was the Genesis of the DoD's Tactical Biometrics program.

Rest in Peace, Warriors
