Yup, BDE still has an E-9 for their ops SGM. 4th BN has one now and that's where I'm sitting having finished my 1SG time with Aco 4th RTB.

Check your ego. It doesn't matter who your Ranger buddy/squad mates/platoon mates are. You are relying on them, and they are relying on you. Doesn't matter if you are PV2 Batt boys, IOBC grads, 82nd NCOs or legs. you are all the same.

Learn about your squadmates are and what their strengths are. Your squad has a PFC that does FDC, have him do your fire support overlays. Comm guy in your squad, have him suppervise radios. etc.

No matter what, doen't get an attitude. You are never tabbed out until graduation. If you are doing well on patrols, they will probably have you be APL for the PLs that still need a go.

Absolutely... I tabbed out as PL planning phase day ONE. Wound up getting three more APL patrols as there were a lot of guys hurting for a passing patrol to make the grade. My platoon pretty much fell apart in the heat wave of 9-80, with a whole bunch of issues.

You never know when you'll be tagged for a graded leadership position. Lightning can and will strike the same place twice, or more.

Makes me glad I already graduated, a long long time ago, and never have to do that again.

It's much easier now. I went to the last hard class.

I'm glad there was never a re-cert either.

"First easy class"

the good news is, as of '15, they were eating about twice what I got (summer Ranger). I assume it was to do with recovery periods over the last 15 years.

LOL, a guy from my platoon at 1st Force in the class ahead of mine got struck by lightning in the mountain phase. Went to the hospital for a day or two and they let him reclass because he'd already gotten his leadership go.

LOL, nothing like adding a little pressure. I'll add my .02 centavos, land nav, hike comfortably with a 70lb pack, then land nav and hike some more. Everything else just sucks. Bring with you the most comfortable boots you can, I was fairly lucky being a Marine and able to bring a pair of green jungles that I wore every day. I think the advice given by jhes 160 as the current Ops SgtMaj is probably best. Be a leader and be an even better follower. Just be glad that Sgt Britt isn't there to lay some scunnion on that ass!

One thing to add as a FOG who went thru right after the last sabre tooth tiger had been eliminated at Dahlonega.....

Always always always know exactly where your patrol is and where it is going - you may be thrust into the PL position when you least expect it and you better know your location and mission.

All the other advice is gold.

Bobby was a PV2 when I first met him in 2/B/1/75...I was a SP4.
Later after a break in service he was a SSG in B Co and I was a SGT in A Co (for 4 more months)
