Audie Murphy
Here is a YouTube clip I had never seen, a little slow in the beginning but interesting to see how he was clearly not comfortable when asked about military service.

I try wrap my mind around the fact that he was a rifle company commander at the age of 18 (18!!!) and that just blows me away. That was truly an amazing period of history.

I think its an interesting sign of the times. It seems they knew him more for being a Medal of Honor recipient than for being an actor. What a time that must have been to live in to have military members as celebrities.
he died at age 46 in a plane crash. How interesting it would be if he were still here. http://www.audiemurphy.com/biograph.htm

Does anyone know if any actors are serving in the military today? I don't keep up with Hollywood gossup, but I sincerely doubt it! |

He is also the most decorated American soldier for bravery. My dad bought me his book To Hell and Back when I was like 10 and I read that sucker until it feel apart. He was supposed to go to West Point after the war but his wounds prevented further military service. For quite some time afterward he was despondent and apparently struggled with what we know now as PTSD, so much so he slept with a .45 under his pillow.
The man is the epitome of Hero in my book.

I looked up to him as a kid liked the book and the movie.I was at a Vet Center and read a article on his speaking out on his struggles with PTSD.Convinced me I had nothing to be ashamed of.The article also said he beat his addiction to sleeping pills by locking himself in a hotel room for a week.Thats a real man in my book.

There is an Audie Murphy museum in Greenville, Tx. Also there is an excellent memorial to him visble on the north side of I30 inear Greenville. I didn't get the mile marker, because my wife was driving and I was terrified.

Good lookin kids there Bro. Good to see they are being properly educated. Good parenting right there. Only by teaching our kids about these MOH reciepients, and other honored military and LE people, can they have true heros that are worthy of their respect. Audie Murphy was a showcase of what one determined individual can do, when he sets his mind to doing it, and does not let others dictate his future. Wonder what he would have accomplished had the Airborne accepted him?
