OTOH, maybe he won't be surprised at all.
I fully understood your plot when I posted. I figured if Cruise didn't get the lead maybe Travolta would and you know that guy is gay as a 3 dollar bill.

Travolta could have a cameo as Rear Admiral Chas “Wide Receiver” Dillon, a buddy refuelling bird aviator.

That would be super duper “mid air refuelling” ghay.

Socnet can’t get sued for speculative screenplay fiction ideas right?

For the record, this is totally fiction.

Tom Cruise and John Travolta are both super straight and I think Scientology is super awesome despite being banned in Germany and ridiculed by most other normal human beings.

The trailer has dropped.

Footage of the F-18 throughout, except there at the end (I think).

I was kinda hoping the movie would be Maverick and Iceman dog-fighting with RC airplanes in some VA Hospital parking lot.

I think Tom Cruise is an absolute set of clown shoes in a used cardboard box - but damn if I'm not going find out what ole' Pete Mitchell has been up to for the last 30 years.

It could however, be a multi-century prequel to "Star trek"
Dont forget - the carrier he flew from WAS the USS Enterprise.
...and that Tom Cruise guy really really REALLY does seem to buy into science fiction as an ethos

I cant wait to buy a ticket.

Is he actually flying that plane? The reason for the delay?

Yes. He delayed production so that he could get the requisite experience to film parts of him actually flying (obviously not solo, though).

He did not fly any of the Hornets. The P-51 you see briefly is his and he is flying that.

They put him the front seat of single seat hornets to make it look like he was flying but put him in the backseat of an 2 seat F variant for the flying sequences.

The flight scenes look promising and a big improvement over the original. I am disappointed in too much of a carry over from the original like the volleyball scene and the singing at the piano bar....and the pressure suit seen at 1:57 in the trailer....WTF is that about?

I'll still see it at the theater with my kids.
