MOH Recipients, what drove them at the moment?
A native of my then 1940's small town died Nov 20, 2009. Alejandro Ruiz who was a field worker and ultimately drafted into the Army arrived on Okinawa during WWII. During the Oki battle this 20-year old's unit was pinned down in a ravine. Mr. Ruiz advanced upon the Japanese alone with a rifle. When that rifle jamed the Pvt clubbed two Japanese to death with the empty weapon, retreated to find a loaded weapon, then advanced again upon the Japanese. Mr. Ruiz was ultimately awared the MOH by President Truman.
I had seen Mr. Ruiz several times around my now medium sized town, the last time as we were cashing in our aluminum beer cans. He looked like the average Joe. But within this great man lied a tremendous force unkown to most of us. Mr. Ruiz will be buried will full military honors in the Yountville. CA. Cemetery. Rest in peace Mr. Ruiz. You have earned it. |
