Pope, born in Milton, Mass., graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College in Maine before entering the Corps. He received his commission in November 1941, just weeks before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

My roommate's boyfriend is a retired Navy Captain, and was present at today's service as a representative of Bowdoin College, which was also the alma matter of Joshua Chamberlin. He said that it was an incredibly humbling experience.
