A little more on him- through the NO SLACK Brotherhood
Nickey Daniel Bacon Passed away from a hard battle with cancer in his home near Rose Bud Arkansas, Saturday Morning July 17th 2010. He was 64 years old having been born in Caraway Arkansas on November 25 1945. At 15 years of age his family moved to Arizona where he enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17. His first tour of Vietnam was with the 1st Infantry Division in 1966. His second tour was in 1968 with Company B, 4th Battalion, 21st Infantry, Americal Division. it was on August 26th 1968 that he recieved The Congressional Medal of Honor for actions conducted during a sweep west of Tam Ky in Quang Tin Province. His application for a third tour of duty in Vietnam was denied. He attained the rank of Master Sargent after serving a 22 year Army hitch. He returned to Arkansas and was appointed Director of Arkansas Veterans Affairs by then Governor Jim Guy Tucker .
He was a very humble man and never spoke of any of his time in Vietnam. Other awards earned consisted of the Distinguished Service Cross, Two Bronze stars with V, Legion of Merit, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Purple Heart. He served twice as the President of the National Medal of Honor Society and was a Veterans veteran. He was a former Commander of American Legion Post One in Little Rock and appointed to the National Veterans Affairs Office in Washington D.C. by then President Clinton. He returned to Arkansas and was essential in the development of the Arkansas State Veteran Cemetary Foundation and established the Arkansas Veterans Coalition. His MOH citation stated that on August 26 1968 during a routine patrol with a one tank escort an intense battle occured. The tank was disabled during the first minutes of the fight. During this battle Bacon single handedly rescued several pinned down soldiers under heavy machine gun fire. He destroyed several enemy bunker complexs with grenades and pistol and assumed control of two other platoons whose leaders were badly wounded. He climbed on the back of the tank fully exposed and directed fire upon the enemy firing the 50 cal. until it overheated and stopped. He then rallied the men to surge forward and destroy the remaining bunkers and VC. After Third Platoon leader was badly wounded Nick assumed command of the company and continued to destroy all enemy emplacements and caused them to retreat leaving their dead and wounded behind. He requested to be interred in Arkansas instead if Arlington National Cemetery. Today I sadly give this information because it will not be on any news cast or front pages of newspapers except here in the Great State Of Arkansas. Pisses me off as Hollywood snit Lindsay Lohan is front page and first on the NBC/ABC/CBS networks for attending rehab and not a word about this Super Human Soldier and his contributation to our Country RGR.M sends
